侘寂 · Wabi Sabi

The beauty of things as they are.

Wabi is quiet simplicity. Sabi is the beauty time leaves behind. Together they say: nothing has to be perfect to be worth loving.

Turn it over

Nothing lasts, nothing is perfect, nothing is complete.

Not a sad thought, a freeing one. You can stop waiting for the finished version of your life and start loving this one.

The back

Imperfection is beauty, simplicity is truth.

Often the flaw is exactly what gives a thing its value. In a handmade cup, in an old table, in the people we love.

Mended with gold

In Japan, a broken bowl is mended with gold.

The crack is not hidden. It becomes the most precious part of the bowl, and the part of its story worth telling.

Imperfection is beauty

The things you call flaws may be exactly what someone loves about you.

Often the imperfection is what gives it its value. Carry it as a reminder, or give it to someone whose imperfections you love.

Back of the Wabi Sabi Coin
A sensibility rooted in Japan

The beauty of life as it is.

An object worn by time can become more cherished. A handmade cup keeps its slightly irregular shape. Wood develops a patina, and a garden changes from one season to the next.

In sixteenth century Japan, tea masters such as Sen no Rikyū cultivated an appreciation for rustic vessels and natural, irregular forms. A modest object could become the center of an experience filled with attention.

The things you call flaws may be precisely what I love about you.Wabi Sabi

Look with kindness. Cherish what is unique. Make room for imperfect beauty.

The beauty others see in us. Sometimes what we judge harshly in ourselves is seen with tenderness by someone who loves us. An unusual laugh, a little awkwardness, the way we search for words or get excited about something simple. In those gestures, someone recognizes us.

Close to a real person. In a couple or a friendship, closeness grows through knowing the other person’s particular qualities. We come to love a real person, with their expressions, habits and unique way of being.

Growing, and already worth it. Life keeps changing. People learn, relationships deepen, and objects collect the traces of time. You can work on what you want to improve while appreciating what already exists. Your story is still open, and it has value at this stage too.

The crack is not the end of the story. Often it is the most valuable part.

Good to know

A few answers.

What does wabi sabi mean?

Wabi and sabi are concepts from Japanese aesthetics. Wabi is associated with quiet simplicity and the beauty of modest things, sabi with the beauty that comes with time and wear. Together they describe an appreciation of things that are simple, changing and imperfect.

What does the coin say?

The front reads WABI SABI with the kanji 侘 and 寂, blossoms, clouds and a ring of waves. The back reads “Nothing lasts, nothing is perfect, nothing is complete” and “Imperfection is beauty, simplicity is truth.”

Who is it for?

Anyone who is too hard on themselves, a partner you love exactly as they are, perfectionists learning to let go, and lovers of Japanese culture. Tick “This is a gift” to add a free printed note.

Is there a matching key tag or sleeve?

Yes. The Wabi Sabi Key Tag carries the same design, and the Wabi Sabi Leather Coin Sleeve is stitched for this coin. Bought together with a coin, every item is $5 less.

What are the finishes made of?

Antique Bronze and Antique Silver are brass alloy; the silver finish is not solid silver. Both are die-struck in the USA and chemically aged, so each coin has its own slightly different patina.

How does free US shipping work?

US shipping is free on orders of $49 or more. A single coin ships for $4.99. Add any second item, a coin of any design or an accessory, and every item is $5 less.

When will my order arrive?

Orders ship in 1 to 2 business days. US delivery takes 3 to 5 business days after dispatch, international 14 to 21 days.

What if I need to return it?

Email us at [email protected] within 30 days of delivery. Undamaged items are refunded for the amount you paid; shipping is not refunded. Items bought with a discount code are final sale. Full shipping and returns policy.

The meaning

Wabi sabi is a Japanese way of seeing beauty in what is simple, worn and unfinished. It grew out of the tea ceremony, where 16th century tea masters such as Sen no Rikyu chose rough, handmade bowls over perfect ones. A cracked bowl repaired with gold, the art of kintsugi, comes from the same spirit.

The back sums up the idea in words many people now live by: nothing lasts, nothing is perfect, nothing is complete. The coin adds the conclusion: imperfection is beauty, simplicity is truth.

The design

The front carries WABI SABI across a full moon, with the two kanji 侘 and 寂 above and below, framed by small blossoms and curling clouds. The back sets the quote inside a simple ring, with a single small blossom between the two halves.

On good days and hard days

  • On good days, it helps you enjoy things as they are, without waiting for them to be perfect.
  • On hard days, when you are harsh on yourself or something breaks, it reminds you that nothing is perfect or complete, and that imperfection has its own beauty.

Carry it

Hold it when you catch yourself fixing something for the tenth time, or judging yourself for a flaw nobody else sees. One customer wrote that it carries one of their favorite Zen messages and is exceptionally well made.

Give it

One customer bought two, one for themselves and one for their partner, as a way of saying that the little things their partner calls flaws are what make them beautiful. It also suits a perfectionist, an artist or potter, and a new home that will never be quite finished. For keys, there is a matching Wabi Sabi Key Tag.

Specs

  • Diameter: 1.54 in (39 mm), about the size of a silver dollar
  • Thickness: 2.7 mm
  • Weight: about 1 oz (28 g)
  • Material: brass alloy (Antique Bronze, Antique Silver)
  • Made: die struck, minted in the USA
  • Each coin is antiqued with a special patina so it looks like it has already been in circulation. The patina never settles the same way twice, so no two coins look exactly alike. Small variations in color and shading are normal, and they are what make your coin one of a kind.
