The meaning
In Meditations, Marcus Aurelius wrote that a mind free from passion is a citadel: there is no stronger place for a person to retreat to. The back of this coin puts his thought in plain words. The historian Pierre Hadot later named a whole book on Marcus after it, The Inner Citadel.
The idea is simple and practical. You can't always choose where you are, who is shouting or what goes wrong. You can always step back into your own judgment, and nobody can take that from you.
The design
The front shows a bearded philosopher whose head opens into a fortress, its towers rising where his thoughts would be, framed by laurel and stars. The back sets the quote on a shield laid over a stone wall, with laurel branches on either side.
On good days and hard days
-
On good days, it helps you protect the calm you have built, so success and noise don't knock you off balance.
-
On hard days, when pressure, conflict or chaos surrounds you, it reminds you to step back into your inner citadel. Your inner strength is a mighty fortress.
Carry it
Hold it before the meeting, the call or the shift you are dreading. One customer said they relate to the meaning and keep adding more of our coins. Another bought twelve for their team.
Give it
It is a strong gift for people who work under pressure: first responders, nurses, teachers, managers, a team in a hard quarter. One customer gave it to a friend who, in their words, embodies the idea. It also pairs well with a copy of Meditations.
