About this edition

This was our first Alexander coin. When we later redesigned the front with a portrait of Alexander, the new version became our Alexander the Great Coin. We kept the original under its own name, Alexander of Macedon, so the two are easy to tell apart. The First Edition will not be struck again; when these are sold, there will be no more.

The meaning

Alexander was king of Macedon, the kingdom in the north of ancient Greece. As a boy, according to Plutarch, he tamed the horse no one else could ride, Bucephalus, and that horse carried him through his campaigns from Greece to Egypt and on to India. The line on the front, there is nothing impossible to him who will try, is one of the most quoted lines tied to his name, and this design shows it in action: a charge straight at the goal.

The back brings it home: you get in life what you have the courage to ask for. Be focused, be persistent, never quit.

The design

The front shows Alexander charging on a rearing horse, round shield raised and weapon in hand, above a crowd of soldiers, with the quote around the rim and Alexander the Great at the bottom. The back carries the second line on a shield framed by leafy scrollwork, with a radiant star in a circle above it, a nod to the sun emblem of ancient Macedon.

On good days and hard days

  • On good days, it reminds you to keep asking more of life while things are going your way.
  • On hard days, when the odds look too big, it gives you Alexander's answer: there is nothing impossible to him who will try. Be focused, be persistent, never quit.

Carry it

It is a coin for the moments that need a charge rather than a plan: the cold call, the first rep, the decision you keep postponing. One customer, a fan of ancient Greek history, called it a solid reminder of one of its great leaders.

Give it

History lovers and people who like owning the first version of something tend to choose this one. It is also a meaningful gift for anyone named Alexander, Alex or Alexandra, and for a leader, founder or graduate with a big goal in front of them.

Specs

  • Diameter: 1.54 in (39 mm), about the size of a silver dollar
  • Thickness: 2.7 mm
  • Weight: about 1 oz (28 g)
  • Material: brass alloy (Antique Bronze, Antique Silver)
  • Made: die struck, minted in the USA
  • Each coin is antiqued with a special patina so it looks like it has already been in circulation. The patina never settles the same way twice, so no two coins look exactly alike. Small variations in color and shading are normal, and they are what make your coin one of a kind.

Questions

Why is it called Alexander of Macedon?
Alexander was king of Macedon, in the north of ancient Greece. We use the name to set our original design apart from the current Alexander the Great Coin.

Who was Bucephalus?
Alexander's famous horse. Plutarch tells how the young Alexander tamed him by turning his head toward the sun, so the horse no longer shied at his own shadow.

Will the First Edition be made again?
No. This design will not be restruck. When these are sold, there will be no more.

Which Alexander coin should I choose?
Choose this one for the battle charge on horseback and the first edition story. Choose the Alexander the Great Coin for the portrait. The message on the back is the same.
