The meaning
Alexander III of Macedon became king at 20, was taught by Aristotle, and by the time he died at 32 he had led his army from Greece to Egypt and on to India without losing a major battle. The line on the front, there is nothing impossible to him who will try, is one of the most quoted lines tied to his name, and it sums up how he lived.
The back turns it into something you can use on an ordinary Tuesday: you get in life what you have the courage to ask for. Ask for the raise, the meeting, the second chance. Then do the part that makes asking worth it: be focused, be persistent, never quit.
The design
The front shows Alexander in profile, crowned with laurel, the quote around the rim and his name and dates, 356 to 323 BC, beneath him. The back carries the second line on a shield framed by leafy scrollwork, with a radiant star in a circle above it, a nod to the sun emblem of ancient Macedon, and be focused, be persistent, never quit around the edge.
On good days and hard days
- On good days, it pushes you to aim higher and ask for more, instead of settling for the goal that feels safe.
- On hard days, when the goal looks impossible, it reminds you that nothing is impossible to the one who will try. Be focused, be persistent, never quit.
Carry it
Keep it in your pocket on the days you have to ask for something: the pitch, the interview, the hard conversation. Hold it, read the back, and ask. It also works on a desk, next to the plan that still looks too big.
Give it
It is a strong gift for a founder on launch day, a graduate with big plans, a new manager or a friend about to take a leap. History lovers like it for the portrait, and it is a fun, meaningful gift for anyone named Alexander, Alex or Alexandra.
Specs
- Diameter: 1.54 in (39 mm), about the size of a silver dollar
- Thickness: 2.7 mm
- Weight: about 1 oz (28 g)
- Material: brass alloy (Antique Bronze, Antique Silver)
- Made: die struck, minted in the USA
- Each coin is antiqued with a special patina so it looks like it has already been in circulation. The patina never settles the same way twice, so no two coins look exactly alike. Small variations in color and shading are normal, and they are what make your coin one of a kind.
Questions
What does “there is nothing impossible to him who will try” mean?
Most goals look impossible only until someone tries. Effort, not certainty, is what moves them.
